PROGRESA, GUATEMALA

BRINGING THE OPPORTUNITY AND CHOICE THAT COMES WITH HIGHER EDUCATION TO YOUNG WOMEN IN GUATEMALA

Just outside the historic city of Antigua, Guatemala, a quiet revolution is taking place in the town of Parramos. Progresa is working to transform the lives of Maya youth—one scholarship at a time.

For Indigenous students in Guatemala, especially those from rural communities, access to higher education is extraordinarily rare. Progresa is working to change that reality. Through university scholarships, along with mentoring and workshops, Progresa offers not only financial support, but a future filled with potential.

Last year, with CCI support, Progresa awarded scholarships to 86 students across Guatemala. Each student commits to performing annual community service in their hometown — an integral part of Progresa’s mission to cultivate community leaders.

One shining example of this mission in action is Miguel Costop, Progresa’s Executive Director. Miguel himself is a former scholarship recipient who brings personal insight, integrity, and vision to his leadership.

This work is not just about degrees or diplomas. It’s about creating the conditions for long-term social and economic development — starting with education, and spreading outward through service, leadership, and community investment.

WITH YOUR HELP

ELIZABETH WAS THE FIRST IN HER FAMILY TO ATTEND UNIVERSITY

In 2024, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy Engineering from the premier Universidad de San Carlos, an unusual field of study for women in Guatemala. She now advises farmers in rural communities on how to grow crops with fewer chemicals.

ELIZABETH IS A ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG WOMEN who wish to consider an education in Agronomy.

"My major was Agronomy Engineering; in particular I studied systems of agricultural production at the Universidad de San Carlos of Guatemala."
