CEF enables girls living in poverty to attend school, boosting their chances of a life with meaningful choices and expanded opportunities. Education in Vietnam is free but the price of school fees, uniforms and required “extra tuition” tutoring classes prevents many young girls from ever entering the schoolhouse. This amazing grassroots program is managed by Linda Hutchinson Burn and a staff of six highly competent and dedicated Vietnamese women who place, mentor and oversee over 250 girls in schools each year, including more than 30 currently attending university. Each girl is screened to assess her family’s financial needs. Girls accepted into CEF’s sponsorship program can attend school and are mentored by CEF staff, who remain in contact with each girl’s family and her teachers. More recently, CEF launched a program giving secondary school girls in ethnic minority villages a chance to go on to university.
As a result of CEF’s successes, we doubled our annual support, allowing for the expansion of their sponsorship program, providing the opportunity for an education to more girls and young women.

SEVENTH GRADER YOOM CONSISTENTLY EXCELS IN SCHOOL
She always does her best in school AND BELIEVES EDUCATION IS THE ONLY WAY TO HELP HER IMPOVERISHED FAMILY AND PREPARE FOR LIFE. This year her hard work paid off: All of her grades are above 90, and she was selected to join the Advanced Literature class. At home, Yoom does household chores and prepares meals while her father works long hours as a laborer; her mother is severely disabled. The three-generation family of 7 lives in a concrete house with one main room and a small kitchen.
