For a majority of deaf and hearing-impaired children in Vietnam, going to school is not a possibility. No learning sign language. No making friends. No playing on sports teams with other kids. The resulting inability to communicate (even with family members) leads to social isolation, typically a lifetime of poverty and low self-worth. Thanks to the visionary Mai McCann and her dedicated staff, Hearing and Beyond provides high quality education to hearing impaired children in Hoi An, Vietnam, enabling them to learn sign language and other subjects so they can grow up to be vital members of their community.
In addition to tuition support, CCI funding of Hearing and Beyond has allowed for the purchase of hearing aids and staff salaries. We even made a special one-time grant for moving expenses to relocate the school to a larger facility.
WITH YOUR HELP
NGA IS LEARNING TO COMMUNICATE AND STRIVE FOR HER DREAMS
Three generations live together in Nga’s home, a situation considered lucky in Vietnam. Unlike many children who attend Hearing and Beyond, she already had acquired some speech before she began school last year, primarily because her mother spoke to her all day, every day – which can be very effective for children who are hard of hearing, but not completely deaf.
Nga is very good at math and she enjoys reading story books. She is a bright and energetic child with a free and independent spirit who loves to learn.
